Privacy Policy: Al-Kafi App

1. Information We Collect

We collect no personal information. The app runs without accounts, email addresses, or any personally identifiable information. We operate no backend server that receives user data.

2. Data Stored on Your Device

The app saves the following data locally using your device's storage (localStorage):

• Favorite hadiths (IDs of hadiths you've starred)
• Highlights (color-tagged excerpts with optional notes)
• Your personal comments on hadiths
• Custom lists you've created
• Reading history (recently opened hadiths)
• Search history (stays on your device only)
• Preferences (font size, theme)
• Daily-reminder preferences (chosen time and on/off state), only if you enable notifications
• A random internal ID used by the data-merge system during import
• What the home screen widgets show: a copy of your favourite numbers for «من مفضلاتي» (From My Favourites), the number you chose for each «رواية مختارة» (Chosen Hadith) widget, and a random number of your own install that sets the order of «رواية اليوم» (Hadith of the Day). These are kept in storage the app shares with its widgets on your device

Images you save with «حفظ في الصور» (Save to Photos) are written to the photo library on your device and are never uploaded. On iPhone and iPad the app asks for add-only access; on Android it asks for no permission; on no device does it read your photos.

None of this data leaves your device automatically, and it is erased from the device when you uninstall the app (on Android a backup copy may remain in your Google account, see section 3).

3. Backup and Sync (Optional, and different on each platform)

On iPhone and iPad (iCloud): on Apple devices signed into iCloud, the app syncs your data across your own Apple devices using Apple's NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore service.

• Data travels through Apple's servers and is stored in your iCloud account; we do not access it and do not store it on our servers.
• Your iCloud-synced data is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
• You can disable this sync at: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud → الكافي.
• Synced: favorites, highlights, comments, lists, reading history. Not synced: UI preferences (font size, theme) since those are per-device.

On Android (Auto Backup): there is no iCloud sync. Instead the app takes part in Android's built-in Auto Backup, so your favourites, highlights, notes, lists, settings and home screen widget choices are included in your device backup under your own Google account (end-to-end encrypted on Android 9 and later when the device has a screen lock) and return to you when you install the app on a new device or reinstall it. That backup is managed by Android and your account; we cannot reach it and no server of ours is involved, and it is governed by Google's privacy policy. You can turn it off in your device settings: Settings, then Google, then Backup.

On Mac: since version 1.0.7 your data syncs through iCloud exactly as described above for iPhone, under the iCloud account signed in on the Mac; a copy stays in the app's data folder on your Mac, and you can also move it with the export file (section 4).

In the browser: your data is kept in the browser's storage for this site on your device and never reaches a server. Clearing the site's data in the browser erases it, so keep an export file if you want to move it.

4. Export / Import (Optional)

The app lets you export your data as a JSON file you can share with anyone you choose (a friend, a backup, another device).

• Export only happens when you explicitly tap the export button.
• We do not transmit this file anywhere; you decide how to share it (email, AirDrop, messaging app, etc.).
• When importing a friend's file, you see a summary of what it contains before merging, and you can cancel.

5. Local Notifications (Optional)

If you enable the "Daily Hadith Reminder" feature from the «المزيد» (More) tab, the app schedules daily notifications directly on your device using your operating system's local notification system (iOS or Android; the feature is not available in the Mac and browser versions).

• Notifications are scheduled and stored locally on your device only. They never travel through an external server, including ours.
• Each notification's content (the day's رواية text) is selected from data already on your device.
• Disabling the feature from the same menu cancels every scheduled notification immediately.
• You can also turn off notifications system-wide: Settings → Notifications → الكافي.
• Haptic feedback (the brief tactile "tap" you feel on certain interactions) runs entirely on-device via the system Taptic Engine and collects no data.

6. Third-Party Services

The app does not communicate with any external data-collection service:

• No analytics SDK (no Google Analytics, no Firebase Analytics, no Mixpanel, etc.).
• No advertising or ad-tracking frameworks.
• Arabic typefaces (Tajawal, Amiri) and the text-shaping engine (HarfBuzz, used to render share images) are bundled locally inside the app, run entirely on-device, and are not loaded from any external CDN.
• When you share a رواية, whether as a link or as an image, the content is generated entirely on your device and handed to the app you choose via the system share sheet; al-Kafi does not upload, store, or track shared content.
• «البحث بالمضمون» (meaning search) runs on your device with Microsoft's ONNX Runtime. The Android build of that engine includes a client that reports diagnostic data to Microsoft by default; we have turned it off since version 1.1.0 (22), so it sends nothing.
• The only outbound network activity in the iPhone app is the optional iCloud sync, and the Android app does not connect to the internet. When the app is installed, the operating system itself fetches a public file from the app site to verify share links; that request carries none of your data. The Mac and browser versions are described below.

Mac and browser versions: the Mac app syncs through iCloud as in section 3, and checks for an update on launch with a plain request to the app site (alkafi.mishkat.dev) and downloads the signed update from GitHub when one exists; the request carries no identifier or data about you. The browser version loads the book from the app site once and then works offline. No version includes analytics or tracking.

7. Children's Privacy

The app is appropriate for all ages and is not specifically directed at children. We collect no personal information from users of any age. The app complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by virtue of not collecting data at all.

8. Your Rights

• Access your data: All of it is visible inside the app (favorites, comments, highlights, etc.).
• Modify your data: Directly within the app.
• Delete your data:
  • To erase from your device: uninstall the app.
  • To erase iCloud-synced copies: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → الكافي → Delete Data.
  • On Android: the device backup is managed and switched off under Settings → Google → Backup; its retention and deletion follow Google's policy.
  • On Mac: delete the app and its data kept in your account's Library folder under the app identifier dev.mishkat.alkafi.
  • In the browser: clear the site data for alkafi.mishkat.dev in your browser settings.
• Export your data: Use the "Export Data" option in the «المزيد» (More) tab at any time.
• Data portability: The exported file can be imported on any other device running the app.

9. Security

Data on your device is protected by your operating system's built-in security (iOS, Android or macOS), and in the browser by its per-site data isolation. Data synced via iCloud is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple. When you export and share a data file, you are responsible for choosing a secure sharing channel.

10. Data Retention

We retain no user data because we collect none. Local data persists on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. iCloud data persists in your iCloud account until you manually delete it, and the Android backup stays in your Google account under Google's policy until you manage it from the device settings.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app or legal requirements. Any material change will be surfaced inside the app on first launch after the update.

13. Jurisdiction-Specific Notes

GDPR (EU/UK): Since we collect no personal data, most GDPR articles do not apply. You retain full control over your data through the rights listed in section 8. Our lawful basis for processing any device-local data is your direct consent expressed by using the app.

CCPA (California): We do not sell or share personal information. We do not collect personal information as defined by the CCPA.
